Wasco, Kern County
Wasco began as a stop on the Santa Fe line at the end of the 1890s and incorporated in 1945. For decades the fields around it produced more than half the rose bushes sold in the United States, and the town still celebrates a Festival of Roses each September. Almonds and pistachios have since taken over much of that acreage. Bakersfield is about 25 miles to the southeast.
